of the members thereof, they shall be formed into said two
classes; the first class shall go out of office at the end of one
year from the first Monday of June following their election,
and the second class at the end of two years from the first
Monday of June following their election ; and at said first
meeting after their election and qualification, the two mem-
bers from each ward shall determine by lot which shall hold
the long and which the short term, and on the third Monday
of May, in each subsequent year after the year 1874, one
member of said Council shall be elected from each ward, to
take the place of the retiring members, under the classifica-
tion herein provided, and all members elected to said Body
after the first election herein provided, shall be elected and
hold office for a term of two years from the first Monday of
June following their election.
