550 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 27,
1873, with their names, and the amount of compensation
actually paid them; also, a statement showing the amount of
printing done by his order during said year, by whom done,
and the actual amount paid therefor; also, a statement of the
temporary clerical assistance employed by him during said
year, with the names of parties employed as temporary clerks,
and the amount actually paid for their services; also, the
amount actually expended by him as travelling expenses
during said year, in performance of the duties imposed on
him by law,' which was by a vote of the House laid on the
table.
"And whereas, The Comptroller is anxious and lias
requested that a full investigation shall be made as to
every item of the expenditure in regard to said office: there-
fore,
"Ordered, That the Committee on Ways and Means be,
and they are hereby, instructed to inquire into all the ex-
penditures of the Comptroller's Office, in regard to clerks
and all other expenses, and that they especially inquire into
the expenditures on account of the contingent fund, and
every item thereof, and that they report to this House within
ten days from this date," respectfully report, that they have
investigated the expenses of the Comptroller's Office in re-
gard to clerks and other expenses, in compliance with the
above order, and have appended hereto a statement, showing
the same in detail. They find that since the year 1866, the
salary of one of the assistant clerks has been raised, by law,
from one thousand dollars to twelve hundred dollars, and
the salary of the chief clerk has been raised from fifteen
hundred dollars to sixteen hundred dollars, and an addition-
al clerk has been authorized, by Act of Assembly, at a salary
of $1,200, making in all fifteen hundred dollars increase of
salaries since the year 1866. Your Committee find that the
amounts expended for salaries and otherwise have been ex-
pended strictly in accordance with law. The amount for
travelling expenses the Committee believe to have been
judiciously and properly expended, and that the State has
derived a large return for the expenditure. Your Commit-
tee report that the Contingent Fund has been judiciously and
economically used, and that a large balance of said fund is
unexpended for the years 1872 and. 1873, as will appear by
the statement hereto annexed.
