312 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 10,

number attending the city schools from this county is under
three hundred instead of three thousand, as claimed by the
City Council. Two years ago, when a similar resolution was
passed, the number of county children attending the city
schools was found to be so beggarly small, that action was
rescinded in order, I believe, to conceal the number so attend-
ing. We have quite a number attending at Nos. 8 and 13,
1st district, from the city, more than enough to balance
those attending in city from the county. At our next meet-
ing of the Board, I intend to introduce a resolution on the
subject. The falsity of the assertion, that three thousand of
our children attend city schools, will be apparent from the
table accompanying this note. I suppose it will be admitted
that children from a distance do not attend the city, it must
be those from walking distance, say the coveted two miles.

The whole number attending school in Fall term, 1873, in
the county, was 123 schools, 5,372.

The number attending inside the two miles, per table, was
16 schools, same term, 1,495.

13th District, No 3, Unionville ....................... 34

" 4, Sextonville....................... 31

1st District, No. 1, Calverton......................... 61

" 8, Three Mills, Fred'k Road... 82

" 10, Loudon Park.................... 81

" 13, Butcher's Lane................. 231

3rd District, No. 4, Clifton ............................ 105

" 5, Woodberry....................... 135

9th District, No. 1, Huntingdon Ave............... 113

" 12, Waverly.......................... 158

" 4, Homestead........................ 89

" 2, Hampdon Village.............. 105

12th District, No. 1, Canton ............................ 105

" 2, Philadelphia Road.............. 60

" 14, Highlandtown................... 55

" 12, Neisendorfers .................... 40

Total......................................1,495

From this table it will bo seen that more than one-fourth
of the children attending school in the county attend in the
schools located within the two miles from the city limits, and
the numbers are large enough to justify me in saying that
the children of that portion of the county do not depend on
the city schools for an education.

Justly and truly yours,

W. M. ISAAC.

I find, I say, that the number attending school in the city
from the county is balanced by those from the city attending
