1844. Jos. H. Nicholson was elected. On motion of Mr. Alexander, Mr. Andrew Sheir was appointed Messenger, and Mr. Samuel Peace Door Keeper. On motion of Mr. Gaither, the Electors proceeded to ballot for President, and, by district ballots, for Vice President of the United States, agreeably to the requirements of Law. On motion of Mr. Gaither, Henry Clay, of the State of Kentucky, was nominated for President of the United States. The ballots of the Electors were then deposited in the ballot box which was delivered by the President to Messrs. Gaither and Ricaud, who were charged to count the ballots and report the result; after a time, they reported there had been Eight ballots cast, all of which were for Henry Clay, of the State of Kentucky. Whereupon, it was declared that Henry Clay, of the State of Kentucky, had received Eight votes for President of the United States from and after the Third Day of March next ensuing, being the whole number to which the State of Maryland is entitled. On motion of Mr. Ricaud, Theodore Frelinghuysen, of the State of New York, was nominated for Vice President of the United States. The ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box, which was delivered by the President to Messrs. Ricaud and Gaither, who were charged to count the ballots and report the result; after a time, they reported there had been Eight ballots cast all of which were for Theodore Frelinghuysen of the State of New York. Whereupon it was declared that Theodore Frelinghuysen, of the State of New York, had received Eight votes for Vice President of the United States from and after the Third Day of March next ensuing being the whole number to which the State of Maryland is entitled. On motion of Mr. Ricaud, the Secretary was directed to request of the Governor the certificates of the Election of the Electors required to be furnished by the 3rd. sect. of Chap. 109. of the Act of Congress 1792. The Secretary accordingly prescribed said request to His Excellency the Governor, who returned for answer that the Certificates should be prepared and forwarded forthwith. Presently a sealed communication addressed to the Electors was presented, containing three certificates, each in the following words, towit: " In obedience to an Act of Congress, approved the 1st. of March 1792 Chapter 109, and a supplement thereto approved March 26th. 1804 chapter 403 I do hereby certify that William Lingan Gaither, James R. Ricaud Thomas S. Alexander, William Price, Charles R. Stewart, Augustus W. Bradford, Henry E. Wright and Samuel Hambleton Junior were |
