1856. Leary (another of the Electors) to be by him conveyed and delivered to the Judge of the District Court of the United States for the District of Maryland. On motion of Mr. Swann the following form of credential was read and adopted and the blank filled with the name of Chapman Harwood. State of Maryland to wit: To all persons whom it may concern, know ye that we the Electors of President and Vice President of the United States of America duly elected in and for the State of Maryland having met at the City of Annapolis on the day prescribed by the Constitution and laws of the United States to perform the trust reposed in us and having voted and made out in due form certificates and lists of the votes given and the persons voted for and having confidence in Esq. of A. A. County have appointed and be these presents do appoint an authorise him to take charge of one of said certificates and lists and with all convenient despatch to convey and deliver the same to the President of the Senate of the United States at Washington. In witness whereof we have hereto set our hands and seals this third day of December in the year eighteen hundred and fifty-six. The said credential was accordingly prepared in due form by the Secretary and signed and sealed by the Electors. Whereupon the President delivered it with the other (the third) Electoral Certificate to Chapman Harwood with the direction to convey it with all convenient despatch befor the first Wednesday in January next ensuing to the President of the Senate of the United States at Washington and in the event of their being no President of the |
