  LIX.

Rule to direct 
the commissioners.

                                LAWS of MARYLAND.

    IX.  And, as a rule to direct the street commissioners with respect to what streets,
lanes or alleys, ought to be first paved or otherwise improved, Be it further
enacted
, That upon application to the said commissioners, made in writing, and
signed by the applicants, to have any street, lane or alley, paved or otherwise
improved, that the said commissioners shall, in all such cases, be governed, in
forming their judgment, by the greater or lesser importance of such street, lane
or alley, to the increase, improvement and general trade, of the said town.

Streets on
Fell's Point
to be considered,

&c.
    X.  Be it enacted, That the streets in that part of the town commonly
called Fell's Point, and leading from thence to the main part of Baltimore-town,
ought to be considered as entitled to early attention, especially to
such immediate repairs as to render them more convenient for the transportation
of goods and the purposes of commerce.
Commissioners
to licence
dramatic exhibitions,
&c.
    XI.  Be it further enacted, That the said special commissioners shall be and
are hereby empowered to licence dramatic exhibitions within the limits of the said
town; and the managers of the present established theatre, or the manager or
managers of any theatre or theatres that may hereafter be erected for dramatic
exhibitions, shall, previous to their acting, make application to the said commissioners
for a licence to act, therein specifying, in writing, the time he or
they intend to act, whereupon the commissioners shall and are hereby required
to grant a licence for the time so specified, for which he, she or they, to whom
the same shall be granted, shall pay at the rate of fifty pounds per annum for
the time specified in the licence, and the same may be recovered as small debts,
before a single magistrate; and that part of the act of seventeen hundred and
eighty-two before recited, imposing a tax of fifty pounds per annum on theatrical
exhibitions, is hereby repealed.
Penalty for
acting without

licence,
&c.
    XII.  Be it further enacted, That any company of comedians acting without
a licence obtained as aforesaid, may be fined at the discretion of the county
or criminal court of the county of Baltimore, in a sum not exceeding ten pounds
for every night they shall so exhibit without licence.
Court may
order certain
persons to
work, &c.
    XIII.  Be it further enacted, That Baltimore county criminal court may, at
their discretion, order any person sentenced to hard labour, to work on the
streets of Baltimore-town, or as many of the said description of persons as they
may, in their judgment, think necessary to aid any of the objects of this act.
Commissioners
may set

the assize of
bread, &c.
    XIV.  Be it further enacted, That the said street commissioners, or a major
part of them, are hereby authorised and required to set, ascertain and appoint,
the assize and weight of the several sorts of bread within the said town and
precincts, and do all and every other thing enjoined on the magistrates by an
act, entitled, An act to regulate the assize of bread, passed in seventeen hundred
and eighty-nine, and make all necessary regulations and appointments for carrying
the said act into execution in the said town and precincts not contrary to
law, and to act in as full and ample a manner as if they had been named in the
said act, any thing therein to the contrary notwithstanding.
Billiard tables,
taxed, &c.
    XV.  And be it further enacted, That the billiard tables erected in the precincts
of said town are hereby taxed and made subject to the same tax imposed
on billiard tables within the town, and the said commissioners are hereby
empowered to collect the same.
On application,
lots may
be enclosed, 
&c.
    XVI.  And be it further enacted, That on application, in writing, by the
proprietors or lots in Ridgely's Addition to Baltimore-town, to the said street
commissioners, for permission to enclose the said lots under fence, or any part
thereof, that thereupon the said commissioners shall view the said Addition, and
grant, under hand and seal, permission, reserving, nevertheless, a thoroughfare
through the said Addition, by directing such street or streets in the said Addition
to be left open as correspond with other streets leading into the country and
improved part of Balimore-town, as, in their judgment, may appear necessary;
