RESOLUTIONS assented to November Session, 1790.
RESOLVED, That the auditor, under the
direction of the governor and council, be authorised
to settle the account between the state of Maryland,
Thomas James Bullit, and his wife, administratrix
of John Caille Harrison, deceased, on equitable principles,
allowing such vouchers
as they may think, under all circumstances, to be reasonable
and satisfactory.
RESOLVED, That all money arising from
arrearages of taxes received from the several collectors
appointed since the first day of January, seventeen hundred
and eighty-three, or their securities, (except
the two shilling and six-penny fund tax,) which shall
be paid into the treasury of the western shore, by
any officer or other person, shall be retained by the
treasurer until the end of the present session of assembly,
and that the appropriations thereof, as heretofore directed
by law, shall be suspended during the same
period, subject nevertheless to such disposition thereof,
different from the present appropriations, as may
be made by the legislature during this session of assembly.
RESOLVED, That the auditor-general,
under the direction of the governor and council, be and heard
is hereby directed to examine the musters of the Maryland
line, and other documents that may be produced,
and liquidate the depreciation on the pay of, and grant
certificates to, Roger Skiventon, late a soldier
in captain Ford's company, and to Robert Britt, late
a soldier in captain Dorsey's company, and to
John Sheredine, late a soldier of the first Maryland
regiment, or to their legal representatives, for that
sum which may appear to be justly due to them, agreeably
to the regulations heretofore established.
WHEREAS by a resolution of the general
assembly of Virginia, passed on the 10th day of December,
1789, it was proposed to the general assembly of Maryland,
that the assembly of VIrginia will pass an
act for advancing a sum of money, not less than one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars, to the use of
the general government, and to be applied, in such manner
as congress shall direct, towards erecting public
buildings, the assembly of Maryland, on their part, advancing
a sum not less than three fifths of the
sum advanced by the said assembly of Virginia; which
resolution came so late to the last general assembly
of Maryland, that it could not be acted upon, and was
therefore referred to this present session: And
whereas this general assembly doth highly approve of
the object of the said resolution, and is desirous
of doing every thing required, on the part of Maryland,
for carrying the same into effect; on a second
reading the said resolution, RESOLVED, That this house
doth accede to the proposition contained in the
said resolution of the assembly of Virginia, and will
advance to the president of the United States, for
the purposes mentioned in the said resolution, the sum
of seventy-two thousand dollars, payable to his
order in three equal yearly payments.
RESOLVED, That the treasurer of the
western shore be directed to credit the late house of John
McHenry, and company's note for the sum of one hundred
and eighty-three pounds five shillings and
ten-pence specie, in certificates at four for one.
WHEREAS by a resolve of the last general
assembly it was directed that no proceedings should be
had against John Taylor and the estate of Alexander Cowan, deceased, as
securities of Archibald Buchanan,
deceased, for a debt due to the state, until the end of this session of
assembly, in order that a
decision might be had in a suit in chancery against Thomas Cockey Deye,
to compel the payment of
money for lands purchased by him, and which were sold for the purpose of
discharging the said debt;
And whereas, since the last session of assembly a warrant of resurvey has
issued by order of the chancellor,
and depositions have been taken, which have delayed the decision of the
said cause; and this assembly
thinking it reasonable that they should be indulged in payment of the debt
aforesaid until a decision
of the said suit in chancery, RESOLVED, That all proceedings against the
aforesaid John Taylor and the
estate of Alexander Cowan, deceased, be suspended until the decision of
the said suit in chancery, or the
end of the next session of assembly, which shall first happen. |
