pounds, and, confiding in the justice and liberality of the public to make good
the amount of the materials taken for public uses, and teh deficiencies inevitably
occasioned during the war, have proceeded to execute the original plan, from
which they did not think themselves at liberty to deviate, and have carried on
the work so far as to secure the shell of the building:  And whereas it appears,
by the most accurate estimate that can now be obtained, that the materials taken
for public uses as aforesaid, amount to teh sum of seven hundred and forty-two
pounds fifteen shillings:

CHAP.
  XVI.

    II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the treasurer 
of the western shore pay to the said trustees, out of the first monies that shall
come into the treasury unappropriated by law, the sum of seven hundred and
forty-pounds fifteen shillings, with legal interest thereon from the twenty-seventh
day of May, seventeen hundred and eighty-eight.

    III.  And, whereas it appears to this general assembly right and proper, that
the said trustees be empowered in a summary way to recover from all persons
who have taken any of the materials aforesaid, the value of the materials so taken,
with damages for the detention of the same, and also to recover from any of the
subscribers on the new subscription the balance of their subscriptions which remain
due and unpaid, Be it enacted, That the said trustees may file a bill in
equity against any person or persons, their agents or attornies, in the county court
where they respectively reside, and the justices of the said courts respectively, shall
and they are hereby authorised and required to proceed ina summary way, at
the first court, to compel a discovery of the materials taken, and payment of the
sum adjudged to be due, with all legal costs, and execution shall thereupon issue,
returnable to the next court, any law limiting the jurisdiction of the county
court notwithstanding.

    IV.  And be it enacted, That it shall and may be lawful for the said trustees
to recover from any of the subscribers to teh said church on the new subscription,
who shall be in arrear after teh twentieth day of June next, the sum or sums due
from him or them, in the court aforesaid, together with all legal costs, by way
of motion to the court, provided that the person against whom such motion
shall be made hath ten days previous notice thereof; provided also, that if the
person against whom such motion may be made, or his attorney, shall desire a
jury to be empannelled, the court shall direct a jury to be immediately sworn to
try whether he did assume to pay, and whether he hath paid; and it shall be
lawful for the said court to direct judgment to be entered on the verdict rendered
with costs, and execution shall thereupon issue, returnable to the next court.

                                            CHAP. XVII.
A Supplement to an act, entitled, An act for the regulation of the
                                markets in Baltimore-town.

27.
    WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that divers persons,
in and about Baltimore-town, make a practice of purchasing
up and engrossing the provisions coming to the said markets, and selling
teh same again, thereby enhancing the price to the great injury of the
inhabitants:
Preamble.
    II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryalnd, That whosoever shall
buy, or cause to be bought, any kind of vegetables, dead meat, poultry, butter,
cheese, tallow, eggs or fish, in any of the markets in Baltimore-town, or within
ten miles thereof, with an intent to sell the same again in such markets or town,
or within two miles thereof, shall, for the first offence, forfeit the article, or the
value thereof, so purchased, for the second offence forfeit as aforesaid and be
fined thirty shillings current money, and for every other offence forfeit five pounds
current money, to be recovred in a sumamry way before a magistrate; provided,
that the purchasign pork, beef and fish, by the barrel, or other package, butter
in firkins, or other package not less than fifty pounds, bacon or cheese by the
