AUGUST, 1699 COURT 523

Archabald Edmundson, foreman, John Dorsett, John Browne, Christopher
Thompson, Charles Wallker, Joseph West, Edward Dawson, James Watts,
James Mullikin, Charles Beall, William Smith, John Demall, George Jones,
Timothy Mayhall, John Davis, David Davis, Phillip Trottershell, William
Greenup. Summoned per William Barton Sheriff.
Which Said Inquest haveing all of them Taken the Oath of Grand Jurymen

was Sent out from the barr to Consider of what Should be brought before them

and after Some Small time returned with these presentments Following (Viz.)
Wee present Abigaile Clifford for Basterdizeing Archibald Edmundson

foreman.
Wee present Thomas Oates, William Seamors and William Clowder for Hog-

stealeng Archibald Edmundson. foreman.

Ordered that William Sewell be putt into the Stocks for being drunke which
was performd by the Sheriffe who Imeadiately abused the Justices then Sitting in
Court for which offence the Sheriffe was Commanded to take him out and have
him to the whipping poast and give him tenn Lashes well Layd on and from
thence into the Stocks againe.

Richard Simms Servant to James Watts adjudged to be fifteen years of age and
to Serve according to Law.

The Grand Jury Discharged and allowd four Hundred pounds of Tobacco att
Mr. Spornes.

Mr. Holsworths Negro Named Livetenant adjudged to be 16 years of age.

Mr. Meryton Through Speaciall favour of the Court was admitted attorney for
John Rooke against his Majesty.

John Chappman in Custody of the Sherife of Prince Georges County being In-
dicted for Hogstealeing made his Personall appearance this Court and noe Person
appearing to alleadge any thing against him the Said John Chappman Proclama-
tion was Made and he was Cleared from the aforesaid Indictment onely he was
Committed into Custody againe till good causion given for all Fees due to the
Officers of this Court.

The Court adjourned for an howr and then Satt the Same Justices Sitting.

Jonathan Bryar Conffessed that he had Stole Onions and Cabidge from
Thomas Wells whereupon in June Court Last past he received his Punishment
for that offence Now made his appearance this Court and noe person appearing
to alleadg any thing against him the Said Jonathan Proclamation was made and
hee was Cleared by proclamation from the Said offence Onely he was Comitted
into Custody for Security for Fees Whereupon Thomas Wells became his bonds-
man to See that performed.

The Court adjourned for an hour and then Mett and Satt (Viz.)

Present. Mr. Thomas Hollyday, Mr. Robert Bradley, Mr. Samuell Magruder,

Mr. James Stoddert.
