We the Grand Jury men of this County doe present Susanna Swanson
Mary Evans upon Suspision of Killing a Beef of Archabald Edmunsons.

John Davis being bound by his Recognizance to appear and answer etc. att his
Court for beating one William Conley. on the back of the Said Recognizance was
written Billa Vera.
The Court adjourned till to morrow Morneing 9 of the Clock and then mett
and Satt (Viz.)

Our Sovereigne Lord the King plantiff against John Davis Defendant
Prince Georges County ss.
The Jurors of our Sovereigne Lord the King for the body of Prince Georges
County upon their Oaths doe Present John Davis Late of the Said County
Planter for that he the Said John Davis the 4th day of September in the year of
our Lord 1698 att Charles Towne within the Jurisdiction of this Court with force
and armes that is to Say with Sword Staves and Fists an assault in and upon one
William Conley of the Same County then and there being did make and him did
beat wound and Even intreat soe that of his Life it was dispaired and other
harmes to him did doe against his Majestyes Pease and Contrary to his Rule and

And the Said John Davis by Joshua Cecell his Attorney Espeasially admitted
by the favour of this Court cometh and Defendeth the force and Injury when etc.
and Saith that he is not Guilty in manner and forme as is in the Indictment
afforesaid Supposed against him and of this he Putts himselfe upon the County.

Therefore it is Commanded the Sheriffe that without delay he Cause to come
here twelve etc. by whom etc. and who neither etc. to recognize etc. becaus as
well etc. and now here att this Day came as well our Sovereigne Lord the King as
the Said John Davis by their attorneys aforesaid and the Jurors thereon Im-
panelled being called Likewise came (to wilt)
James Stoddart, Foreman, Archibald Edmonson, Joshua Hall, Phillip Lewin,
John Robinson, Thomas James, Bartholomew Goff, John Henry, Charles
Wallker, Henry Cullver, John Deakins, Robert Robertson. ,
[357] Who to Spake the truth concerning the premises being Elected tryed and
Sworne doe Say upon their oaths We fine for the Plantiffe, and doe fine him for
the Same in the Sume of five Shillings Sterling money of England, [find]
Ordered by the Court that the Sheriffe take John Davis into his Custody and
him safe Keep untill he Shall finde Sufficient Security for his Good behavior and
for his appearance the next Court to be held here in January next.
And now here att this day (To Witt) the 22d day of November Annoque
Domini 1698 came the Said John Davis and acknowledged himselfe to bee in-
debted unto our Sovereigne Lord the King in the Sume of twenty pounds of
Lawfull money of England together with Nathan Veitch his Security and the
Said Nathan Veitch did acknowledge himselfe indebted unto our Sovereigne
Lord the King in the Sume of twenty pounds of Like Lawfull Money of England
