LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Apply to

applies, shall keep the public roads in good condi-
tion and repair, to the distance of one mile from
their respective incorporated limits, 'and to enable
them to accomplish the same, they are hereby au-
thorized to accept and apply the provisions of this
article to persons residing within the limits of their
respective corporations.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That this act shall only
apply to Worcester county, and shall take effect
from the date of its approval by the Governor.

CHAPTER 232.

AN ACT to pay to Philip W. Downes and George
M. Russum, a sum of money for services rendered
the State as Counsel in the case of the United
States against William H. Whiteley, an officer of
Registration of the State of Maryland, for the
First Election District of Caroline county.

WHEREAS, Philip W. Downes and George M. Rus-
Preambie sum, were duly appointed by Governor Groome,
under the provisions of chapter sixty-one, of the acts
of eighteen hundred and seventy-four, entitled "An
act to provide for the defence of officers of registra-
tion and judges of election, who are, or may be in-
dicted in the United States Courts, for acts done in
the performance of duties imposed by the Constitu-
tion tnd Laws of this State, which acts are alleged
to be in violation of the Act of Congress, approved
the thirty-first day of May, eighteen hundred and
seventy, entitled an act to enforce the rights of citi-
zens of the United States to vote in the several States
of this Union, and for other purposes," and of its
supplement passed at January session, eighteen hun-
dred and seventy-four, chapter three hundred and
seventeen, as counsel to defend William H. White-
ley, an officer of Registration of the State of Mary-
