LAWS OF MARYLAND.

Collect taxes.

to the treasurer of the board of commissioners, and
the said bailiff or bailiffs are hereby empowered with
the same power in the collection of said town taxes,
as tax-collectors for State and county taxes, except
the tax on dogs, in which case the bailiff or bailiffs
are hereby empowered in case of a refusal, by any
one residing in said town of Church Hill, the owner
of a dog or bitch, to pay the tax assessed upon such
dog or bitch, to kill such dog or bitch.

Duty of
bailiffs.

SEC. 23. And be it enacted, That the bailiff or bail-
iffs shall preserve order, keep the peace, serve pro-
cess, abate and remove nuisances, and execute all
orders of the board of commissioners, and he or they
shall have power to command the peace, arrest of-
fenders, collect all moneys due the corporation, and
do all such acts and perform such duties as are gen-
erally performed by constables within the limits of
said town, and in matters pertaining to its govern-
ment.

Offenders.

SEC. 24. And be it enacted, That all offenders under
any of the ordinances, rules, regulations or by-laws,
which shall have been duly passed by the commis-
sioners of Church Hill or a majority of them, shall
upon conviction thereof, before any justice of the
peace, be subject to commitment to the county jail
in default of payment of the fines and costs, not ex-
ceeding ten days.

Especially
empowered.

SEC. 25. And be it enacted, That the commissioners
shall be hereby especially empowered to make or
pass rules, ordinances, regulations, and by-laws pro-
hibiting the use of profane language, drunkenness
and fighting within the corporate limits of said town
of Church Hill, also to prevent all kinds of stock
from running at large within the corporate limits of
said town of Church Hill.

In the name.

SEC. 26. And be it enacted, That all suits at law for
the violation of any of the rules, ordinances, regula-
tions and by-laws be made in the name of the com-
missioners of Church Hill against offending parties;
and all fines recovered in such suits at law, for the
breach of any rule, ordinance, regulation or by-law
of the corporation of Church Hill, before any justice
