SHERIFFS

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    Free negroes, &c. no paying the fine imposed for
emigrating to the state, &c. shall be committed, and
may be sold by the sheriff after ten days notice, for a
term sufficient to pay the fine and costs,
    Compensation allowed to the sheriffs who may be
appointed to keep order in the court of appeals,
    Sheriffs on serving ca. sa. bound to accept payment
of the amount as on fieri facias—to be of the same
force,
—The complainant to have the same remedy against
them as on fieri facias,
    Duty to the sheriffs under the supplements to the
insolvent law to bring in the petitioning debtors under
the orders of the courts,
    See Insolvent Debtors.
    Citations may be issued to the sheriffs to bring before
the orphans courts, &c. the children of paupers,
vagrants, and indolent free negroes, to be bound out
as apprentices,
    Sheriffs to be chosen by ballot by free white male
citizens above twenty-one years of age, having resided
twelve months within the state, and six months
within the county, or Annapolis or Baltimore,
    Time allowed to sheriffs for bringing a prisoner on
habeas corpus if more than 20 miles distant,
—Their duties as officers under the act respecting
such writs, and forfeiture to the prisoner for refusal,
    On refusal or neglect by sheriffs to pay monies in
their hands, the treasurers to direct suits on their bonds,
&c.
    Sheriffs directed to remove persons sentenced to the
penitentiary—penalty for wilful neglect,
    Sheriffs authorised to sell equitable estates in lands
under writs of fieri facias and to assign the same to
the purchasers,
    The sheriff or other officer, having arrested any person
on attachment or capias, and permitted him to go
at large, may again arrest such person, before the return
day or during the term, in virtue of the same process,
in order to produce him before the court,
—Such second arrest to be available as the first,
with the same power to detain, or hold to bail,
    Duty of sheriffs as to the recovery of money paid for
procuring substitutes, for fines, and the consideration
money for being exempt from militia duty.  See Militia.
 
 

   Duties of sheriffs as to writs of scire facias sent to
different counties,
    Proceedings directed where a sheriff having taken
goods, dies before a sale or deed,
    See Executions.
    Directions as to notice of sales by execution,
&c.
    Sheriffs allowed twelve dollars for each election, but
not more if two or more elections should be held on
the same day—to be levied by the levy courts,
—The same compensation for former services,
—Other acts making an allowance repealed,
    Either of the justices of the orphans courts, at the
time of taking the sheriffs bonds, may qualify them in
the same manner as the judges of the county courts,
and transmit a certificate to the clerk, &c.
—Such qualifications, already taken, to be valid and
effectual in law,
    Sheriffs neglecting to make return of process may
be amerced (on proof of delivery,) not exceeding $100,
