—Each of the judges out of court to have the same

a competent number, (in addition to those then
appointed,) as notaries public, for the state, to reside in
such places as the commissions shall direct,
—Provided that there shall not be more than four
to reside within the city and county of Baltimore,
—No person shall be commissioned, who is not a
citizen of the United States, and shall not have resided
within this state two years previous to his appointment,
    Notaries empowered to administer oaths, &c. in
matters incident to their office,
—To receive the proof or acknowledgment of instruments
relating to commerce, and to make protests under
seal, &c.
—To keep registers and give certified copies,
    In case of the death of any notary, his register, and
other public papers, to be lodged with the county clerks,
who may sue for the same,
—Such papers not liable to be taken in execution,
    The notaries to provide notarial seals, with the name,
office and residence, &c. engraved,
—To take an oath of office,
—Their fees prescribed, to be paid at the time of the
service, and mileage in certain cases,

—May perform certain acts in other counties,
