            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

—Not to extend to those having written orders of
licences from their masters, &c.
—Penalty on persons so suffering them,
—Appropriation and recovery thereof,
—Liable to imprisonment if unable to pay,
—Directions concerning the evidence,
    Persons receiving from negroes, &c. any goods, &c.
to be considered as dealing with them, and subject to
the like penalties,
—Not to extend to cases, where by law property
may be bought of them,
    The courts, judges or clerks, to inquire whether the
licence or permit is to be for the use of the applicant
only, and to examine him on oath; if otherwise, to refuse
the same,
    Nothing herein to extend to negroes, &c. employed
as waggoners, or travellers putting up, &c.
    This act to be given in charge to the grand juries,
    Declared not lawful for the courts to sentence negro
or mulatto slaves to undergo a confinement in the penitentiary,
—Such negroes, &c. convicted of any crimes perpetrated
after the passage of this act, which may not in
the discretion of the court be punished by hanging,
may be sentenced to be whipped, or be banished by
transportation and sale into some foreign country, or
one of the United States or territories, other than the
district of Columbia,
—Directions for the valuation and payment,
    Any citizen that has or shall acquire property in
any slave, resident of any of the United States, before
the 21st of April 1783, by marriage, bequest, &c. may
remove such slave, for the purpose only of working,
—Provided a list be rendered according to the act of
1796, ch. 67.
—The owners may sell such slaves after a residence
of three years within the state,
    Not lawful for sheriffs to receive into the public gaol
any negro slave unless committed in due course of law,
—Penalty on so receiving them,
—Not to prevent the owner, (if not engaged in the
traffic of buying and selling slaves,) from having any
slave committed to gaol and supported at his own expense,
 

   And French-town Turnpike Company, incorporated,

    In Dorchester county—swine and geese prevented
from going at large,
    A constable to be annually appointed by the levy
court,
    The trustees of the New-Market Academy incorporated,
