NEGROES & SLAVES

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

prohibit the same, without delivering a list to be recorded
in the clerk's office as heretofore,
—Provided that they shall not be kept out of the
state longer than 12 months at any one time,
    A like provision in favour of citizens of any other
state owning slaves in any county adjoining this state,
    Slaves hired out of this state as above to be retained
as slaves, and not entitled to freedom by such removal,

—Nothing herein to affect the right of any slave
who had before petitioned,
—Parts of acts inconsistent repealed,
    Directions for slaves being assessed,

—To be valued at the respective sums therein mentioned,
according to sex, age, &c.
—Allowance to be made on loss by death, &c.
    Notice directed in case of sales of negro slaves on
execution by sheriffs,
    Provision that no coloured person should be sentenced
to confinement in the penitentiary, on conviction
for any offence, for a term less than one year,
—In such case, or where the court should deem the
confinement for one year or more to exceed the limits
of justice, empowered to inflict corporal punishment or
confinement in the gaol, or both,
    Penalty on persons permitting or authorising a slave
to go at large, or hire within the state after the 1st of
April 1819, except 20 days at harvest,

—On persons hiring or contracting with such slave,
except as before excepted,
—Exception in both cases as to pilots,
—Manner of recovering the penalties,
—This act to be given in charge to the grand jury,
    The act of April 1787, ch. 33, where inconsistent, repealed,
    Every person knowingly selling a servant or slave,
entitled to freedom after a term of years, &c. to any
person not a resident for one year next preceding, or
to any person employed by him, shall on conviction be
sentenced to the penitentiary for a term not exceeding
2 years,
—Same punishment, for selling such servant or slave
for a longer time than he is bound to serve,
—Such servant or slave to be sold, (for the time he
has to serve,) by order of the court, for the benefit of the
county, or for the mayor and city council of Baltimore,
if the conviction is in the city court,
—Same punishment on persons knowingly purchasing
such servant or slave as described in the first section,
principal or agent,
—Such servant or slave to be sold for the unexpired
time, &c. as in the first section,
—Such persons unknowingly purchasing, and after
knowing thereof, giving information on oath, &c. to a
justice of the peace, not liable to prosecution,
    No sale of any servant or slave entitled to freedom after
a term of years, &c. or where there is a title in the
seller for a time, with the reversion in some other person,
to be valid, unless in writing, under the hands
and seals of both the seller, or his agent, and the purchaser,
and acknowledged by them before a justice of
the peace, and recorded within 20 days,
—The period and terms of servitude, &c. the interest
of the seller, and the residence of the purchaser,
to be stated therein,
—On omission thereof, such servant or slave to be
free unless the court and jury, or trial of the petition,
