FEME COVERTS

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    Persons committed for felony entitled to a speedy
trial,
    For other matters, See Crimes, &c.

    In case the eldest male child shall not be of age to
make his election, under the act to direct descents, the
eldest female if of age, may elect to take the land of
the valuation, notwithstanding the existence of any
male minor,
    A society incorporated to educate and maintain destitute
female children,
    A lottery authorised for erecting the Baltimore
Female Academy,
    Female president and managers appointed to the
Baltimore Humane Impartial Society,
    Where a free white female being an alien, intermarries
with a citizen of the United States, and resides
therein, such female enabled to hold and acquire lands,
tenements, &c. and to transfer them as if born therein,

    Acknowledgments by them of their relinquishment
of dower in lands, &c. where the proper form has not
been observed, made valid, provided it shall appear by
such acknowledgment that the same was made willingly
and out of the presence and hearing of their husbands,
&c. or words to that effect,

—Provision as to future acknowledgments,

    Feme coverts, on contributing to the Orphaline Charity
School, &c. empowered to vote at elections therein
as if sole,
    Feme coverts being out of the state may acknowledge
deeds or releases of dower before commissioners,
—Or before a justice of the supreme or circuit court
of the United States,
—Or before the governor or chief magistrate, the
mayor of some corporation, court of justice, or any
judge thereof of the state, &c. where the deed is acknowledged,
—Directions for examining the feme covert out of
the hearing of her husband, returning a certificate,
&c.
—Such certificate to bar her of her inheritance or
dower,
    County clerks on application by the grantee, and assent
of the feme covert and her husband, may issue a
commission to two or more persons residents of the
state, &c. where the feme covert may be, to take her
acknowledgment,
—The deed, &c. with such acknowledgment and 
certificate of examination, to be returned and recorded,
and to be valid, &c.
—To be recorded within the time prescribed by the
act of 1798, ch. 103.
    The clerks to file all written assents by feme coverts
to the issuing commissions,
    Nothing herein contained to prevent the execution,
acknowledgment and recording of deeds, according to
the law then in force,
    Directions as to the acknowledgments of feme coverts
in conveying shares in the Potomac Company,
    Rights of alien feme coverts, whose husbands are citizens.

    All deeds heretofore made for any estate, &c. acknowledged
by feme coverts, wherein it appears by the certificate
that the same were made agreeably to law, or
according to the act of assembly, or words to that effect,
