BALTIMORE CITY

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.

    Commissioners appointed for the extension of South-street,
    Commissioners appointed for opening Centre street,
    Reserves in the city of Baltimore, excepted from real
estate that was liable to confiscation, made liable to be
taken up by warrant,
    An act to provide for a new assessment, and to appoint
collectors of the county tax in and for the city
and county of Baltimore,
    Asbury College founded in the city or precincts,
    A person of sound legal knowledge to be appointed,
who shall be styled District Attorney of Baltimore City
and county of Baltimore,
    See Attornies.
    The city of Baltimore to be divided into twelve wards,
—Provision for a greater number on the progressive
increase of inhabitants,
    Time of annual session of the city council,
    Appointment and tenure of officers,
    Number of electors of the Mayor,
    Power as to direct taxes,
—Payment how to be enforced,
    Appeals from judgments or warrants for fines, &c. to
be to the city court,
    The mayor and city council empowered to issue
stock or otherwise to borrow money,
—Their powers as to nuisances, preserving order,
&c.
—Powers of former commissioners vested in them,
and former acts repealed, except as to rights acquired,
—Directions as to the improvement of Jones's
Falls,
—Power given to purchase property for opening
streets, &c.

    Commissioners appointed to lay off streets, &c.

—Streets how to be opened on application,
—Directions as to paving,
    The governor and council to appoint three disinterested
persons, not residents of the city, to ascertain
and mark the limits thickly settled, built up or improved,
in which the regulations for watching, lighting, or
cleaning the streets, ought to be applied,
—The mayor and city council not empowered to
impose any direct tax on property without such limits,
—Manner of making the survey, &c.
    The election therein mentioned declared valid,
    The forfeitures therein mentioned on managers of lotteries,
to be recovered in the county courts, on the city
court of Baltimore, as the case may be,
    All lotteries authorised by the state shall be drawn in
the city of Baltimore if desired by the managers, &c.
and superintended by them or their agents, with the
consent of the commissioners,
    Part of fines to be for the use of the mayor, &c.
    The bond of the commissioners of lotteries to be approved
by the judges of Baltimore city court,
    The Liberty Fire Company incorporated,
    Provision for the extending of Lombard-street,
    An additional warehouse to be established in the city
of Baltimore—Inspectors to be appointed, and to be under
the same regulations as the other warehouses,
    The Hibernian Society Incorporated,
    The Roman Catholic Free School incorporated,
   The police regulated as to constables—bull baiting,
cockfighting, cruelty to animals, &c.
—Manner of trial.—Punishment of slaves,
    Expenses incurred in the execution of the act of 1816,
ch. 193, to be levied by the mayor and city council on
