CHAP. 122.

                                LAWS OF MARYLAND.

mayor and city council of Baltimore shall nominate and appoint
one sensible and discreet inhabitant, residing in each ward of the 
city of Baltimore, to be a manager of the poor of the ward in
which he shall reside; and each of the said managers of the said
districts and wards, after having taken an oath, or affirmation, as
the case may be, before some justice of the peace of Baltimore
county, that he will well and faithfully perform the duties of a
manager of his district or ward respectively, according to the best
of his knowledge and judgment, shall have full power and authority
to order and direct any indigent sick or disabled person, infant or
ideot, of the district or ward for which he shall be appointed, and
who may be entitled to public relief by law, to go or be taken to
the poor-house of said county, by his order in writing; and every
such manager shall hold the said office until the first day of May
eighteen hundred and twenty-one, and for and during the term of
one year each thereafter, and until his successor is duly appointed
and qualified, agreeably to this act, and shall perform the said duties
of manager gratuitously.

    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the trustees
of the poor-house of Baltimore county, to cause the persons so
sent or taken there, by order of the said managers, to be received,
maintained, and employed therein, so long as in the opinion of such
trustees such persons may be entitled to relief, and require it, keeping
separate lists of the persons sent by the managers of the wards;
and the trustees aforesaid shall, in the next and every future estimate
of the amount necessary for the support of the paupers and
pensioners of the said poor-house, make one estimate of the expenses
of the persons sent there by the managers of the districts, including
the paupers and pensioners of the county, distinctly from the
city, who shall then be in the said poor-house, or supported as out-pensioners
thereof, which estimate they shall deliver to the levy
court of said county annually, and another such estimate of the
expenses of the persons sent to said poor-house by the managers of
the wards, including the paupers and pensioners of the city, distinctly
from the county, who shall then be in the said poor-house
or supported as out-pensioners thereof, which last estimate they
shall deliver to the mayor and city council of Baltimore annually,
and in which estimates the said trustees shall carry forward all excess
or deficiencies of the preceding years, if any there be, so
that the future expenses shall be apportioned between the county
and city, according to their number of paupers and pensioners respectively,
as near as may be.

    3.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the levy court of Baltimore county,
and the mayor and the city council of Baltimore, shall levy the
amounts of the above estimate respectively; that is to say, of the
first mentioned estimate on the property of Baltimore county, exclusive
of the city, and of the last mentioned estimate on the property
in the city of Baltimore exclusively, as the charges of the
city court are now levied, annually hereafter, and pay, or cause
the same to be paid, to the trustees aforesaid, between the first day
of May and the first day of October in each and every year if required.
