LAWS OF MARYLAND.
town of Cumberland, in Allegany county, to meet at the court-house
in said town on the first Monday in June in each year, and there
sit for two days, or longer if necessary, to hear and determine the
complaints and appeals of any person or persons who may think
themselves aggrieved by their property being overvalued by the assessor,
and if said commissioners and chief burgess shall not meet,
and sit as aforesaid, every commissioner or chief burgess failing
therein, shall forfeit and pay a sum not exceeding five dollars, unless
prevented by sickness, or other unavoidable accidents; and if
any person shall apprehend himself or herself injured by the valuation
of his or her property, and shall thereof complain to the said
commissioners and chief burgess, they shall at the time of their sitting
to hear appeals, examine any person, or in their discretion the
party complaining, on oath or affirmation, as the case may be,
touching the particulars of value of such property, and upon due
examination or knowledge thereof, abate or increase the said valuation,
and shall cause their clerk to alter and correct the same
according to such abatement or increase. |
Penalties, how to
be recovered. |
2. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the penalties incurred
and imposed
by this act, shall and may be recovered before a justice of the
peace of said town, as other small debts are, and be applied, one half
to the use of the person bringing the suits, and the other half to be
applied to the improvement of the said town. |

CHAP. XII.
An Act for the benefit of Martha Givan, and her three Children,
of

Levy authorised
for their support. |
BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That
the justices of the levy court of Worcester county, be and they are
hereby authorised and empowered, so long as they may deem necessary,
to levy on the assessable property in said county, a sum of
money not exceeding sixty dollars, for the support and maintenance
of Martha Givan, Benjamin Givan, Mary Givan, and James Givan,
and the same shall be collected as other county charges are,
and when collected shall be paid over to said Martha Givan, or to
any other person appointed by said court to receive the same, for
the purpose aforesaid. |

An Act declaring the assent of the Legislature to the Devise of
Lands
in the Will of John Postly, late of Worcester County,
deceased, to
the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the
United

lands. |
1. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That
the assent of the legislature be and the same is hereby given to the
devise of lands in the will of the late John Postly, of Worcester
county, deceased, to the trustees of the general assembly of the
Presbyterian church in the United States of America, and that the
said trustees of the general assembly of the Presbyterian church,
in the United States of America, be and the same are hereby declared
competent in law to hold the said lands, according to the intent,
and for the purposes mentioned in the devise in said will, to
the trustees of the general assembly of the Presbyterian churches
of American United States. |
