                                        CHAP. LII.
An Act to authorise the drawing of a Lottery for the benefit of Charlotte
    Hall School in Saint-Mary's County.

Passed Jan. 10, 1818.

    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
Francis Digges, Charles S. Smith, George D. Parnham, John
Parnham, Samuel Hawkins, John Campbell, James F. Sothoron,
Henderson S. Boteler, James Forrest, Thomas Blakistone, Thomas
Barber, Luke W. Barber, James Somerville, John J. Brooke,
Clement Dorsey, John R. Plater, Samuel Claggett, Thomas Wilkinson,
and Thomas Gantt, or a majority of them, be and they are
hereby authorised to propose a scheme of a lottery for raising a
sum of money not exceeding forty thousand dollars, and sell and
dispose of the tickets thereof in the city of Baltimore, or any other
part of this state, exclusive of any control over the same by the
corporation of the city of Baltimore, any law or usage to the contrary
notwithstanding; provided, that the said Francis Digges,
Charles S. Smith, George D. Parnham, John Parnham, Samuel
Hawkins, John Campbell, James F. Sothoron, Henderson S. Boteler,
James Forrest, Thomas Blakistone, Thomas Barber, Luke W.
Barber, James Somerville, John J. Brooke, Clement Dorsey, John
R. Plater, Samuel Claggett, Thomas Wilkinson, and Thomas
Gantt, or a majority of them, as shall undertake to act under this
law, shall before the sale or disposal of any ticket or tickets in
said lottery, give their joint and several bond to the state of
Maryland, in the penalty of eighty thousand dollars, conditioned
that they will well and truly apply so much of the money arising
therefrom, within twelve months after the drawing of the said
lottery shall commence, as will satisfy the fortunate adventurers
for prizes drawn by them, and defray the necessary expenses incurred
in the management thereof.

    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of said commissioners
before they act as such, to lodge such bond in the clerk's
office of Saint-Mary's county, there to be recorded, and upon such
bond, or office copy thereof, suit or suits may be commenced and
prosecuted against the obligors therein, or any of them, or their or
any of their legal representatives, for any breach or non-compliance
with the conditions of the same.

    3.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners shall apply
the sum received by them for such scheme to the purposes mentioned
in this act.

    4.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said commissioners shall
within one year after the drawing the said lottery be finished, or
after the sale of the scheme hereby authorised, apply the net proceeds
thereof to the benefit of the said school, and for other purposes
connected with said academy.

    5.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That in case any vacancy or vacancies
shall occur by the death, resignation, removal, or refusal to serve,
of any of the above named commissioners, then and in that case it
shall and may be lawful for the said board to make choice of any
person or persons to fill said vacancy or vacancies.
