                                LAWS OF MARYLAND.

five hundred dollars, to be appropriated to the completion of a wall
around the gaol of Baltimore county, and the building of the Porter's
Lodge thereto adjoining, according to the provisions of the 
act passed at November session one thousand eight hundred and
twelve*, entitled, A further additional supplement to the act, entitled,
An act for building a new gaol in Baltimore county.

                                      CHAP. CXVI.
An Act declaring the River Susquehanna to be a public highway.

Proviso.
    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
in consideration of the act of the legislature of Pennsylvania, passed
the nineteenth day of February eighteen hundred and one, entitled,
An act to incorporate a company for the purpose of cutting
and making a canal between the river Delaware and Chesapeake
bay, and to authorise the clearing of obstructions in the river Susquehanna
down to the Maryland line, and for other purposes therein
mentioned, the bed of the river Susquehanna, from the Maryland
line to the bay of Chesapeake, is hereby declared, and shall
for ever hereafter be a public highway, and that individuals or
bodies corporate may at all times remove obstructions to its navigation;
Provided always, that nothing herein contained shall be taken
or considered to permit any person or bodies corporate whatsoever,
to do any act repugnant to the power given by law (a), to the proprietors
of the Susquehanna Canal, over the waters of the said
river, so far as the same may be necessary for the purpose of supplying
the said canal, and the water works thereon.

                        (a)  November 1783, ch. 23, and 1803, ch. 102.

Copy of this act to
be sent to governor
of Pennsylvania.
    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the governor
of this state to send a copy of this act to the governor of the
commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

An Act to prohibit the Collection of certain Wharfages within the City
                        of Baltimore.

Proviso.
    BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
it shall not hereafter be lawful for the mayor and city council of
Baltimore to collect or impose any tax, duty, toll or wharfage,
upon any goods, wares or merchandise, or other articles, for the
passing the same over any of the public wharves within the said
city; Provided always, that nothing herein contained shall be so
taken or construed as to deprive the said corporation of the right
of regulating, by ordinance, the time during which any goods,
wares or merchandise, or other articles, shall remain on the said
public wharves, or the time which the vessels, boats or scows,
taking in or discharging such goods, wares or merchandise, shall
remain at said wharves.
