cause to be drilled, said persons, separate from his company, if he
shall think proper; Provided, that they shall be drilled on the same
days, at the same place, and as often as his company is required
to meet by this act.

CHAP. 182.

Proviso.

    51.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That out of the militia enrolled as is
in this act directed, there shall be formed for each battalion
at least one company of granadiers, riflemen or light infantry; and
that to each brigade there shall be at least one company of artillery,
each of the non-commissioned officer and privates or matrosses of
which shall, within twelve months after their enrollment in such
company, provide himself with a sword or hanger, under the penalty
of a sum not exceeding ten dollars, nor less than five dollars, at
the discretion of a company court-martial, and a further sum not
exceeding ten dollars, nor less than five dollars, for every year he
shall remain unprovided as aforesaid; and that to each brigade there
shall be attached at least four troops of horse, each of the dragoons
whereof shall, within twelve months after his being enrolled therein,
arm and equip himself in the manner prescribed by the act of
congress, under the penalty not exceeding twenty dollars, nor less
than five dollars, and a further sum not exceeding twenty dollars,
nor less than five dollars, at the discretion of a company court-martial,
for every year he shall delay his armament and equipment
as aforesaid; and every citizen so enrolled, armed and equipped,
shall hold his arms, ammunition, accoutrements and horse, free
and exempt from all suits, distresses, executions, or sales for debt,
rent, or the payment of any taxes; and the governor and council are
hereby authorised, wherever it may be found necessary, to organize
battalions and regiments of riflemen and artillery, and companies
of horse or flying artillery, and appoint the requisite officers; and
when said corps or companies shall have uniformed themselves, the
governor and council are hereby authorised to loan them the necessary
arms and field pieces, agreeably to the provisions of this act.

    52.  AND WHEREAS in addition to the many other advantages
which would result, an immense sum of money would be saved to
the citizens by adopting a uniform for the state, BE IT ENACTED,
That the uniform for the infantry of this state shall be, for general
officers, their aids-de-camp and brigade inspectors, long dark blue
coat faced with buff, buff collar and cuffs, yellow buttons and buff
under clothes, long boots and chapeaux-de-bras.  For field, company
and staff officers, long dark blue coat edged with red, red collar
and cuffs, white buttons, dark blue pantaloons edged with red
for winter, and white under clothes for summer, black gaiters or
half boots, chapeaux-de-bras and black cockade.  For non-commissioned
officers and privates, short dark blue coat, red cuffs and
collar, white buttons, blue pantaloons, black gaiters and shoes or
half boots.  For riflemen, dark green frock or hunting shirt or
trowsers.  For cavalry, short coats and pantaloons of dark blue
cloth edged with red, long half boots, a helmet or cap of leather
covered with bear-skin.  For artillery, long dark blue coats faced
with red, red collar and cuffs, yellow buttons, blue pantaloons
black gaiters or half boots and chapeaux-de-bras.
