CHAPTER 355.
AN ACT to authorize the issuing of licences to
Telegraph Companies and Express or Transporta-
tion Companies, not organized under the laws of
tills State, to transact business therein.
SECTION 1. Be It enacted by the Central Assembly of
Maryland, That from and after the first day of May
next it shall not be lawful for any person to act as
agent, within tills State, of any Telegraph Company
or of any Express or Transportation Company or
Association, not incorporated by this State or organ-
ized under the authority thereof, to transact any
business for such company, firm or association within
this State, or to send or receive messages by tele-
graph, or to send or receive any goods, wares or
merchandise in package, parcels, bales, barrels, or
any other enclosures, or to effect any transportation
of any article of trade or traffic, for and on account
of any such company within this State, or to receive
compensation therefore, or to advertise or offer to
transact any business for or on account for any such
company, or to open any office for the transaction of
such business, without first obtaining a license there-
for, as hereinafter provided.
SEC. 2. Awl be it further enacted. That any agent of
any such Telegraph Company, or Express or Trans-
portation Company, firm and association, proposing
to do business in this State, shall pay to the Comp-
troller for a license for the said company to transact
business at its principal office in this State for one
year, the sum of three hundred dollars, or a propor-
tionate part of said sura for any fractional part of a
year; and all licenses issued in pursuance of tins Act
shall be made to expire on the first day of May next
'succeeding the date of their issue.
SEC. 3. And be it further enacted. That before the
Comptroller shall issue such license, lie shall require
the said company so applying to file in his office a
copy of its charter, and a [a] statement, signed by
the President and Secretary of the said company or
