LAWS OF MARYLAND.
SEC. 16. And be it enacted. That the said Burgess
and Commissioners may collect the amount assessed
against the person or persons benefited by the open-
ing of streets, lanes or alleys, in the same manner as
taxes in said town are now collected, and the amount,
when collected, shall be applied to the payment of
the damages and other expenses incurred in opening
the said streets, lanes or alleys.
SEC. 17. And be if enacted, That the said Burgess
and Commissioners shall not levy any general tax for
leveling or laying pavement before any house or im-
proved land, but may, by a majority vote of the
citizens, levy a general tax for the purpose of open-
ing streets, lanes or alleys, or grading and laying
pavement along unimproved lots.
SEP. 18. And be it enacted, That the said Burgess
and Commissioners may, from time to time, make
such. by-laws as they may deem expedient for the
comfort, health, convenience and prosperity of the
said town, the prevention or removal of neuisances,
preservation of health, and suppression of vice and
immorality.
SEC. 19. And be it enacted, That the said Burgess and
Commissioners may lay an equal tax on the property
within said town to such an amount as may, from
time to time, be deemed necessary, and may appoint
a collector to collect the same, and prescribe his term
of office, responsibility and compensation; and the
said collector shall have the same power to distrain
tor the taxes so levied, as the collectors of county
taxes have, and shall collect and pay the same to the
said Burgess and Commissioners.
SEC. 20. And be it enacted, That the Burgees, for
the time being, shall be the Treasurer of the cor-
poration, and shall give bond to said. corporation,
with security to be approved by the Commissioners,
or a majority of the same, in such penalty as they
shall prescribe, conditioned for the faithful perform-
ance of his duty as Treasurer, and he shall receive
and pay away all moneys, in accordance with the ordinances of the said corporation.
