On motion by Mr. Spates, Leave.was granted to the Committee on Judicial Proceed- ings to introduce a bill, entitled an Act to add an additional section to Article LVII-, of the Code of Public General Laws of this State, title "Evidence." Mr. Downs submitted the following report from the Insti- tution of St. Mary's Female Seminary : REPORT. To the Honorable, The General Assembly of Maryland.- The Trustees of St. Mary's Female Seminary, respectfully report to your Honorable Bo dy, that all the provisions and requirements of the Act of the General Assembly of 1868, "Endowing St. Mary's Female Seminary," have been fully and faithfully complied with. Since the last biennial report to the Legislature of the State, the term of scholarships of the ten young ladies first elected according to the provisions of the Act of Endowment, has expired, must of them having finished their course to the satisfaction of the teachers of our Seminary ; and we take great pleasure in informing your Honorable Body, that some of the young ladies have since become very efficient teachers in the public schools of our State. The trustees have made arrangement for the gratuitous education of three young ladies selected from the county, one of whom, will, after the expiration of the present scholastic term, become a very ac- ceptable and efficient teacher. By the second drawing of the Comptroller of the State, the following counties were declared entitled to scholarships in the Seminary for three years, from the 1st of April last : Charles, Calvert, Prince George's. Harford, Talbot, Caroline, Worcester, Somerset, Alleghany, and Second Legislative District of Baltimore City. All the counties have taken advantage of the Act of Endow- ment, and their appointee" are now receiving all the advan- tages of the Institution, which still remains under the charge of the same corps of accomplished and able teachers. The last annual report of the Principals of the Seminary, to the Board of Trustees, represent its condition as nourishing. We have the further pleasure of informing your Body, that the grading and sodding of the river banks at the north end of the Seminary has been completed, which has added much to the beauty of the situation, and we think will be a very |
