1872.] OF THE SENATE. 431 Also, Senate Joint Resolutions authorizing the Governor to em- ploy counsel to bring suit against the Baltimore Equitable Fire Insurance Company, to recover the amount due said society on an insurance policy on one of the State Tobacco Warehouses in Baltimore city. Which was read the second time. House Joint Resolutions instructing our Senators and Representatives in Congress to use their influence to have the tax collected on raw cotton during the year 1866, 1867 and 1868, refunded, Being on its third reading, Mr. Carroll submitted the following amendment: AMENDMENT PROPOSED. Amend by striking out all after the word " Maryland," and insert the following, "that our Senators in Congress are hereby instructed, and our Representatives requested to use all proper means to induce Congress to refund the moneys collected under the law creating a specific tax on raw cotton during the year 1865, 1866, and 1867) to those who paid, the- same; and that a copy of this resolution be furnished by His. Excellency, the Governor, to each of the Senators and Rep- resentatives in Congress from the State of Maryland. Which were adopted. The resolutions as amended were then passed by yeas and nays, as follows: AFFIRMATIVE. Messrs. President, Jump, Blake, Longwell, Compton, Miller, Carroll, Stephenson, Crawford, Spates, Claggett, Sellman, Demon, Spencer, Davis, Timmons. Earle, Tuck, Fields, ' Wilson, Henry, Williams—22.
