254 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 20, TUESDAY, February 20, 1872. The Senate met. Prayer by Rev. Father Otis. Present at roll call the following Senators : Messrs. President, Compton, Carroll, Crawford, Claggett, Denson, Davis, Earle, Fields, Henry, Longwell, Stephenson, Spates, Sellman, Steiner, Timmons, Tuck, Wilson, Williams—19. The Journal of yesterday was read. Mr. Steiner presented three petitions from John Q. Dennis, and ninety-four other colored citizens of Maryland, asking the passage of a law giving the people of color larger facili- ties for the acquisition of a rudimental education. Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa' tion. Also, The petition of two hundred and seventy-four colored citi- zens and voters of Montgomery county, prying the General Assembly to furnish means for the education of their children, and schools provided for their separate use, so') that they may secure such education for their children as will enable them to become useful members of society. Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa- tion. Mr. Wilson presented the petition of E. D. Hurtt and J. H. Inland lord, and forty-eight other citizens of Prince George's county, praying relief for persons who furnished substitutes or paid commutation money during the late war. Which was read and referred to the Committee on Finance. Mr. Crawford presented the petition of J. H. West and Isaac N. Hearn, and others, of Wicomico county, asking for the removal of gates upon certain public roads in. said county. Which was read and referred to Messrs. Crawford, CIaggett and Fields. Mr. Tuck presented the memorial of the visitors and gov- ernors of St. John's College, asking for the relief therein specified. |
