228 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Feb. 15, Which was read the first time. The President laid before the Senate the following communication from the Comptroller : TREASURY DEPARTMENT, COMPTROLLER'S OFFICE, Annapolis, Feb. 15th, 1872. Eon. Henry Snyder, President of the Senate: DEAR SIR—In obedience to the order of your Honorable Body, passed 12th of February, 1872, I have the honor to report that one thousand eight hundred and eighty-five ap- plications have been filed in this office by men who have been drafted or furnished substitutes, under calls of the President of the United States, other than that of 19th December, 1864, none of which claims have been paid, as no law has ever au- thorized their payment. The only call under which drafted men who furnished substitutes were authorized to receive State bounty by law, was that of 19th December, 1864, under which only a few persons were entitled, and those few are believed to have been all paid by the County Commissioners in the several coun- ties and the City of Baltimore. I have the honor to be, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, LEVIN WOOLFORD, Comptroller. On motion by Mr. Longwell, Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Fields until Tuesday next. On motion by Mr. Fields, The Senate adjourned. |
