coupon a bearing interest, and a legal interpretation upon the
waiver of the State's liens by Act of Assembly of 1844,
chapter 281, and deciding the points for which the suit of
Mr. Corcoran is brought, as we are advised.
Statement "F" is the 'decision of the Court of Appeals on
the Slat December, 1871, respecting the certificates issued by
the Canal Company in 1853, lor coupons funded, up to and
including January, 1854, bearing upon the questions raised
by the bill filed by Mr. Corcoran against the Canal Com-
pany.
The counsel employed to answer for and defend the Canal
Company in the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia,
in the suit brought by Mr. Corcoran; are Messrs. Bernard
Carter and John P. Poe. The residence of Messrs. Carter
and Poe is Baltimore City.
It is not contemplated by the Canal Company to employ
any additional counsel to answer or (defend the .suit brought
by Mr. Corcoran in the Supreme Court of the District of
Columbia, unless otherwise instructed by the stockholders or
Board of Public Works of Maryland
The compensation to the counsel employed has not yet
been fixed ; that will In- determined by the Board of Direc-
tors after the services of the counsel have been rendered. i
presume they will he paid such fee as is usually allowed to
counsel in such cases, in accordance with the services ren-
dered
The appointment of counsel, .is shown by reference to
Statement "D," was made by the President of the Canal
Company, by authority of the stockholders The Board of
Directors of the Canal Company have taken s.o .action upon
the subject of employing counsel.
Tins statement, I think, covers all (lie information) asked
for in the order of the Senate' If anything is omitted, I
shall be glad to supply it, or any other information desired,
which may be in my power to give. I shall take great
pleasure in complying with any order of the Senate.
