THURSDAY, January 25, 1872.
The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.
Prayer by Rev. Dr. Bull.
Present at roll call the following Senators :
Messrs. President. Compton, Carrol], Claggett, Denson,
Davis, Downs, Earle, Fields, Henry, Jump, Longwell,
Miller, Stephenson, Spates, Bellman, Spencer, ("'Steiner,
Timmons, Tuck, Wilson, Williams—21.
The Journal of yesterday was read and approved.
Mr. Steiner presented the petition of Leonard Pickering,
John R. Rouzer and twenty-four other citizens of Mechanics-
town, in Frederick county, complaining of recent appointments
of School Commissioners by one of the Judges of the Circuit
Court of paid county, and asking that the School Commission-
ers be elected by the people, and that provisions be made for
the education of colored children.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa-
tion.
Mr. Stephenson presented the petition of Mrs. Eliza Howlet, asking to be placed on the pension roll.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Pen-
sions.
Mr. Spates presented the petition of thirty-five citizens of
Allegany county, asking pensions for Matilda Long and Har-
riet Woods, of said. county.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Pen-
sions.
Mr. Earle presented a memorial from the Maryland Agri-
cultural College.
Which was read, and referred to the Committee on Agri-
culture.
Mr. Spates presented a petition from one hundred and thirty-
two citizens of Allegany county, asking authority to divide
said county.
Which was read and referred to Messrs. Spates, Fields,
Longwell, Compton and Tuck.
Mr. Stephenson presented the petition of eighty citizens of
Harford county, asking that gill-nets be prohibited by law
from fishing within water-births of shore and battery fisheries.
