1872 OF THE SENATE. 11 AFFIRMATIVE. Messrs. President, Henry, Compton, Jump, Carroll, Longwell, Crawford, Miller, Denson, Stephenson, Davis, Spates, Downs, Sellman, Dennis, Spencer, Fields, Wilson—18. NEGATIVE. Messrs. Claggett, Williams—3. Tuck, Raid resolution was then sent to the House of Delegates. The hour of 12 o'clock having arrived, the Senators pro- ceeded to the House of Delegate to enter into Joint Assem- bly for the election of United States Senator. JOINT ASSEMBLY. The hour of 12 o'clock, noon, having arrived, the Senators of Maryland appeared in the Hall of the House of Delegates, and the two Houses, in Joint Convention, in conformity with the provisions of the Act of Congress, 1866, chapter 245, entitled "An Act to regulate the times and manner of hold- ing elections for Senators in Congress," proceeded to hold an election lor Senator to succeed the lion. Geo. Vickers, as Senator from Maryland in the Congress of the United States. The roll of Senators was then called by the Secretary of the Senate, and the roll of the House of Delegates by the Clerk of the House. When it appeared, by a viva voce vote of each Senator and Member present-, (a majority of all the members elected to both Houses being present and voting,) that on JOINT BALLOT Hon. George R Dennis received 81 votes. Hon. Jacob Tome " 1 " Hon. Lewis H. Steiner " 11 " 93 Whereupon, it appearing that the Hon. George B. Dennis had received a majority of all the votes cast', (a majority of all the members elected to both Houses being present, and voting), The Chairman declared that the lion. George R. Dennis having received a majority of all the votes cast by the Joint |
