Convention, (a majority of all the members elected to both
Houses being present and voting,) he is, therefore, elected
Senator from the State of Maryland to the Congress of the-
United States, for the term of six years, commencing on the fourth day of March, 1873.
The" Senators' having returned, resumed the consideration;
of Legislative business.
Mr. Derson presented the petition of Harriet Anna Ayres,
asking pecuniary aid.
Which was read and referred to the Committee on Finance.
The Clerk of the House of Delegates appeared and delivered
the following message:
BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,
January 19th, 1872.
Gentlemen of the Senate :
We propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable body,
to appoint a Joint and Special Committee of five (three from
this H us;} and two from the Senate) to notify the Hon.
George R. Dennis that he has been this day duly elected to
represent this State in the United States Senate for six years,
from and after the 4th day of March, 1873. We have ap-
pointed on the part of this House Messrs. Linthicum, Stone,
and Coles.

Chief Clerk.
Mr. Compton submitted the following message:
BY THE SENATE,
January 19th, 1872.
Gentlemen of the 'House of Delegates :
We have received your message, proposing the appoint-
ment of a Joint-Special Committee, whose duty it shall be-
to inform the Hon. Gen. R. Dennis of his election to the U.
S. Senate, and concur therein.
We have appointed on the part; of the Senate Messrs Compton and Fields.

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,
Secretary.
Mr. Carroll moved to suspend the rules, in order to give a
third reading to Senate bill, entitled an Act supplementary
to an Act, entitled an Act to incorporate the Germania Library
Association of Baltimore.
