1872.] OF THE SENATE. 31 The Senate took a recess until 1 o'clock, P. M., in order to give an opportunity to the Committee of Arrangements to prepare the Chamber for the inauguration of the Governor elect. At one o'clock, P. M., the Senate met pursuant to ad- journment. The hour of 11 o'clock, P. M., having arrived, the Hon. W. Pinkney Whyte, the Governor elect, accompanied by His Excellency, Governor Bowie, and the respective Commit- tees of the Senate and House of Delegates, appeared in the Senate Chamber and took seats assigned them. The Honorable, the Speaker, and Members of the House of Delegates appeared, whereupon the Governor elect arose and delivered an address in the presence of the General As- sembly, the Honorable Judges of the Court of Appeals, and a large concourse of citizens, when the oath of office was administered by the Hon. James L. Bartol, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, agreeably to the Constitution. The Honorable, the Speaker, and Members of the House of Delegates, Governor Bowie and the Hon. Governor Whyte having retired, . On motion by Mr. Denson, The Senate adjourned until 11 o'clock to-morrow, THURSDAY, January 11, 1872. The Senate met pursuant to adjournment. Prayer by Rev. Dr. Bull. Present at roll call the following Senators ; Messrs. President, Blake, Compton, Oarroll, Crawford, Claggett, Denson, Downs, Dennis, Fields, Henry, Jump, Longwell, Miller, Stephenson, Spates, Sellman, Spencer, Steiner, Timmons, Tuck, Wilson, Williams—23. The Journal of yesterday was read and approved. Mr. Denson presented a memorial from P. C. Freize, with accompanying resolutions, etc. |
