tendered the tax or toll affixed by the President
and Directors as hereinafter provided.
Sec. 8. And be it enacted, That the said Presi-
dent and Directors be and they are hereby au-
thorized and empowered to take all necessary steps
and measures for removing from said narrows all
rock, stone, debris, impediments and obstructions
of any and every kind whatsoever, to the use and
navigation of said narrows, and for cutting and
deepening a way or channel through the same, of
such depth and width as in their judgment they
shall deem proper and necessary to admit of the
passage through the same of steamboats, vessels
and other river craft; and in consideration of the
great risk and expense of the Company in building
and keeping up said bridge, and in fitting said
narrows for navigation, as aforesaid; the said
bridge, when completed, and all the profits of said
draw, as hereinafter provided for, and the sole and
exclusive use and ownership of the granaries,
wharves and landings, as hereinafter provided for,

and the profits of the same, and the right to con-
trol and direct the use and navigation of the said
narrows, as deepened by them and rendered navi-
gable, and the right to collect taxes or tolls for
same, be and the same are hereby vested in said
Company forever, to be held as tenants in com-
mon, in proportion to their respective shares of the
stock; and it shall and may be lawful for said
President and Directors to demand and receive
such reasonable tax or tolls as they may from time
to time agree on, and require of the owner or own-
ers and agents of all steamboats, vessels and other
craft passing through the draw of said bridge, or
sailing upon or making use of the said narrows,
when the same shall have been cut, deepened and
rendered navigable by said Company, as aforesaid,
which rates or tolls shall always be made public,
and shall not be changed oftener than once in
[in] a year, and shall be a lien on any steamboats,
vessels or craft incurring the same, until paid and
discharged.

pany be and they are hereby authorized and em-
powered to establish and build one or more grana-
ries, wharves and landings on either side of said
narrows, as they may deem necessary for the em-
