The following communication and statement from the Sec-
retary of the Senate in response to an order of the Senate.

Which was read and referred to a Joint Select Committee
on the subject.

SIR : In compliance with the following order, passed the
Senate on the 12th March instant, to wit :

"Ordered, That the Secretary be instructed at as early a
day as practicable to report to the Senate the number of offi-
cers or persons employed, and the duty assigned, to each,"
