BY THE SENATE,

January 6,1870.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

We have received your message, informing us of the
organization of your Honorable Body. The Senate has
organized by the election of the Hon. Barnes Compton, Presi-
dent, and the appointment of Augustus Gassaway as Secre-
tary. We are now ready to proceed with the business of the
session, and concur with your Honorable Body in the ap-
pointment of a Joint Committee to wait upon his Excellency
the Governor, and inform him that the General Assembly is
prepared to receive any communication he may be pleased, to
make. We have appointed on the part of the Senate Messrs.
Earle and Henkle.

Which was read, assented to and sent to the House of
Delegates.

Mr. Snyder submitted the following message :

BY THE SENATE,

January 6,1870.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates:

We propose, with your concurrence, the appointment of
the Joint Standing Committee of the Senate and House of
Delegates as is required by the twenty-fourth, section of the
third Article of the Constitution, who shall have power to
send for persons, and examine them on oath, and call for all
public or official papers or records, and whose duty it shall
be to examine and report upon all contracts made for print-
ing, stationery, and purchases for the public offices and the
Library, and all expenditures therein, and upon all matters
of alleged abuse in expenditures to which their attention
may be called by resolution of either House of the General
Assembly. We have appointed on the part of the Senate
Messrs. Snyder, Clarke. Fields, Earle, Henry.

Secretary.

Which was read; assented to, and sent to the House of
Delegates.

Mr. Denson submitted the following order :
Ordered, That a committee of three be appointed, by the
Chair, to confer and report upon the names of Ministers suit-
able to officiate as Chaplains in the Senate during the session.

The Chair appointed Messrs. Denson, Carroll and Earle.
