At the request of the General Assembly, the
Governor created the Maryland Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Commission in February 1984 (Joint
Resolution no. 22, Acts of 1983). The Commission
developed recommendations for a Vietnam war
memorial to honor Marylanders who were killed or
missing-in-action during that conflict.
Construction of the memorial began October
1988 at Middle Branch Park in Baltimore. Dedica-
tion is scheduled for May 28, 1989. The Commis-
sion continues meeting to monitor and assist in the
work of erecting the memorial.
The Maryland Vietnam 'Veterans Memorial will
display the names of the 1,046 State residents who
died in Vietnam from 1959 to 1975. Included
among these are the names of 37 Marylanders who
are listed as missing-in-action.
The Commission submitted an interim report to
the Governor in October 1988.
