The Maryland Marathon Planning Committee
originally was created by the Governor in 1972 to
plan the first Maryland Marathon for 1973. Ap-
pointed by the Governor, the Committee now
plans and executes each Maryland Marathon.
The Maryland Marathon is a long-distance race
for runners held annually in Baltimore. Normally,
the event is scheduled for the last Sunday of No-
vember or the first Sunday of December.

In December 1985, the Governor created the
State Advisory Council on Nutrition (Executive
Order 01.01.1985.35). The Council serves as an
advisory board to the Governor and the Gover-
nor's Cabinet Council on the Coordination of
Food and Nutrition Services. The Council makes
recommendations for a comprehensive State poli-
cy on food and nutrition and for public and pri-
vate programs that prevent and treat malnutrition
and poor dietary habits. Food and nutrition pro-
grams and program plans come under Council re-
view.
Appointed to two-year terms by the Governor,
the Council has fourteen members.

In May 1987, the Governor established the Spe-
cial Committee on the Port of Baltimore. The
Committee is to study the status of the Maryland
Port Administration within State government and
recommend ways to improve the operational effi-
ciency of the Administration. The Committee will
report to the Governor by November 1987.

The Governor appointed the Task Force on Pri-
vate Sector Day Care Initiatives in January 1986.
The Task Force is to explore and promote the de-
velopment of day care services and assistance by
the private sector. In pursuing this work, the Task
Force will examine the role of the Day Care Fa-
cilities Guarantee Loan Fund, available through
the Department of Economic and Employment
Development. The Task Force also will consider
incentives that might encourage more business
participation; examples of success and failure in
private sector day care services; and the role of
government in enhancing corporate participation.
The Task Force will submit its report by June
1987.
