County Seat: Cumberland 21502

Origin: The County was erected by Chapter 29,
Acts of 1789, from Washington County.

Name: The name is from the Indian word,
oolikhanna, meaning "beautiful stream."

Form of Government: Code Home Rule (1974)

County Code: See Code of the Public Local Laws of
Allegany County (1984).

Area: 428 sq. miles (427.62 land; .38 water)

Population. 1900: 53,694; 1950: 89,556; 1960:
84,169; 1970: 84,044; 1980: 80,548.
