The Values Education Commission was created
by the Acting Governor in January 1979 at the
request of the General Assembly (Joint Resolu-
tion no. 26, Acts of 1978). The Commission
identifies and assesses ongoing programs in moral
and values education in Maryland's schools. It is
to report to the Governor with recommendations
toward implementation of values education in the
curriculum.

Balanced in its State and local representation,
the Commission consists of representatives from
the State Department of Education, State govern-
ment, local school boards, the Maryland Con-
gress of Parents and Teachers, curriculum special-
ists, school teachers, principals and counselors,
clergy (Judeo-Christian sector), youth, the Mary-
land Chamber of Commerce, labor and industrial
development, and the public at large.

pose, draft reports on principals, teachers, and
counselors, and Attorney General's Opinion are

Appointed by the Governor in 1981, the Task
Force on Violence and Extremism was formed in
response to an increase in overt acts of violence
and intimidation aimed at certain racial, ethnic,
and religious groups. Composed of the heads of
appropriate State agencies, the Task Force is to
develop a series of approaches, consistent with
each agency's area of responsibility, to counter
such activities. The Task Force is to investigate
means to achieve a standardized system of identi-

fying and reporting racial, religious, or ethnic in-
cidences of violence or intimidation; recommend
ways to ensure an effective system of law enforce-
ment, human relations, and educational programs
to assist those who are the victims of this type of
activity; and propose methods to prevent or elim-
inate violence and extremism.

A brochure noting Task Force services, publi-
cations, and subcommittees, as well as the March
1982 report to the Task Force by the Survey Re-
search Center, University of Maryland, are avail-
able upon request.

The Governor created this commission in 1981
(Executive Orders 01.01.1981.02, and 01.01.1981.
.08). The Commission is to conduct a thorough
study of laws governing or related to workmen's
compensation. It shall recommend changes in
State law as appear to be in the public interest.
The Commission reports annually to the Gover-
nor by October 15.

The Commission consists of thirteen members
appointed by the Governor. One is a Senate
member, recommended by the president of the
Senate. One is a member of the House of Dele-
gates, recommended by the speaker of the House
of Delegates. Eleven members are persons whose
knowledge, training, and experience enable them
to evaluate workmen's compensation matters and
whose interest is in the implementation of bal-
anced and well developed workmen's compensa-
tion laws.
