The Department of Post-Mortem Exam-

to replace a decentralized system of local
coroners, is directed by a commission com-
posed of a representative of the State De-
partment of Health and Mental Hygiene,
the Commissioner of Health of Baltimore
City, the Superintendent of Maryland State
Police, and the Professors of Pathology at
The Johns Hopkins University and the Uni-

Examiners. In 1957 the General Assembly
authorized three Assistant Medical Exam-
iners and an Assistant Toxicologist. In
1965 an additional Assistant Medical
Examiner and an Immunochemist were
added and in 1969 a Deputy Chief Medical
Examiner and an additional Toxicologist

State. They must file a report of all deaths
investigated with the Office of the Chief
Medical Examiner.
The records of the Department are open
for inspection to the family of the deceased
and are acceptable in Court as evidence of
the facts contained. The county pays the
Deputy Medical Examiners for each death
investigated. The State Comptroller pays
the salaries of the Chief Medical Examiner,
the Assistant Medical Examiners, and the
Toxicologists, and the expenses of perform-
ing autopsies in the counties and the trans-
portation of bodies incident thereto. All
other expenses of the Department are paid
by the City of Baltimore (Code 1957, 1966
Repl. Vol., Art. 22).
