The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center was established by Chapter 558, Acts of 1967. It is located on the grounds of the Spring Grove State Hospital. Construction was begun in June 1967, and it was completed in 1968. The Center provides a program of basic and applied interdis- ciplinary research in mental illness and mental retardation. It also coordinates research activities at the various State mental hospitals, and offers training in research for graduate and post-graduate stu- dents in psychiatry and behavioral sciences (Code 1957, 1968 Repl. SPRINGFIELD STATE HOSPITAL Frederick Pokrass, M.D., Superintendent Sykesville (Carroll County) 21784 Telephone: 787-2100 The Springfield State Hospital, established by Chapter 231, Acts of 1894, opened for patients in 1896. The hospital provides for the care of mentally ill patients from Baltimore City, zones 8, 9, 10, II, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 34, and Allegany, Garrett, Washington, Frederick, Howard, Carroll and Montgomery counties. It is the facility for tuber- culous mentally ill patients from the entire State. The budget is predicated upon a population of 2,875 for the fiscal year 1971, and 2,725 for the fiscal year 1972. SPRING GROVE STATE HOSPITAL Bruno Radauskas, M.D., Superintendent Catonsville (Baltimore County) 21228 Telephone: 747-4400 The Spring Grove State Hospital, established in 1797 as the Mary- land Hospital, provides for the hospitalization of mentally ill patients from Baltimore City, zones 7, 23, 26, 27, 29, and 30, and Cecil, Har- ford, Howard, Prince George's and Baltimore counties. It adopted its present name by Chapter 187, Acts of 1912. Treatment covers a. wide range of modern techniques, including individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, environmental (milieu), psychophannalogical, convul- sive, musical, recreational, industrial, occupational, and physical therapy. The budget is predicated upon a population of 2,350 for the fiscal year 1971, and 2,275 for the fiscal year 1972. Appropriations 1971 1972 General Funds $12,177,123 $13,164,744 Staff: 1,395.
