By an Executive Order during the same year, he established the Council as a permanent agency. Thomas, Administrative Assistant 701 St. Paul Street, Baltimore 21202 Telephone: 383-3680 The Commission on Human Relations was originally created by Chapter 559, Acts of 3927, which established a permanent "Inter- racial Commission" to consider matters concerning the "welfare of colored people residing in the State ... ., recommend legislation and sponsor movements looking to the welfare of said people, and to the improvement of interracial relations and to cooperate with other State agencies to these ends." Subsequent legislation enacted by Chapter 280, Acts of 1933, by Chapter 431, Acts of 1943, and by Chapter 548, Acts of 1951, changed the name and the composition of the Commission. It adopted its present name and expanded its mem- bership by Chapter 83, Acts of 1968. |
