Morris, State Administrator of Election Laws, 1975 140 Main Street, Annapolis 21401 Telephone: 267-5711 The State Administrative Board of Election Laws, created by Chapter 556, Acts of IMS, exercises supervision over the conduct of elections in the State. The Board consists of five members appointed by the Governor by and with the advice and consent of the Senate for four year terms. Three members must be of the same political party as the Governor, while two members represent the party which received the second greatest number of votes in the most recent gubernatorial election. The Board selects its own officers. The Governor also appoints the State Administrator of Election Laws for a six-year term. The Board assumed all powers and duties formerly vested in the Secretary of State with regards to elections. It adopts rules and regu- lations to assist the local Boards of Supervisors of Elections with regards to elections, voting, and voter registration. The Board is to keep election records and make an annual report to the General Assembly (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Vol., Art. 33, Bees. 1A-I, 18-1, 18-2). BOARD OF STATE CANVASSERS Reginald A. Burch, Attorney General. 140 Main Street, Annapolis 21401 Telephone: 267-5711 The Board of State Canvassers, originally created by Chapter 202, Acts of 1896, had its membership expanded by Chapter 739, Acts of 1957. Its membership was reconstituted by Chapter 555, Acts of 1&69. It meets thirty days after any State election to tabulate the votes cast for each candidate from the certified statements of votes made by the city and county boards of canvassers. The Board declares who is elected and delivers a certificate of election to the Administrative Board. It issues the proclamation of election, keeps the records of the Board, and delivers a copy to the Governor who issues a commission to the persons elected (Code 1957, 1971 Repl. Vol., Art. S3, sees. 18-1,18-2). |
