AIRPORT ZONING BOARD

The Airport Zoning Board was created by Chapter 450, Acts of
1968 to supervise the zoning in the vicinity of Friendship Inter-
national Airport. At the present time, a suit is in the courts contesting
the sale of the property by the city of Baltimore.
The Board, consisting of five members appointed by the Governor
with the advice and consent of the Senate for four-year terms, is to
have authority over all zoning matters within a three-mile limit of the
outer perimeter of the airport. One member must reside in Anne
Arundel County while one member must be a resident of Baltimore
City. The Governor designates the Chairman (Code 1957, 1964 Repl.
Vol., 1968 Supp., Art. 62C, sec. 21).

Chapter 450, Acts of 1968 also created an Airport Zoning Commis-
sion composed of three members appointed by the Airport Zoning
Board. One member must reside in Anne Arundel County and one
must be a resident of Baltimore City. The Board of Airport Zoning
Appeals designates the Chairman.
The Commission recommends the boundaries of the various original
airport zoning districts and adopts the appropriate regulations to be
enforced therein (Code 1957, 1964 Repl. Vol., 1968 Supp., Art. 62C,
sec. 21f).

The same Act also created a Board of Airport Zoning Appeals
which is to consist of five members, all of whom are to be appointed
by the Airport Zoning Board. Three members must be residents of
Anne Arundel County and the other two must reside in Baltimore
City. The Airport Zoning Board designates the Chairman.
The Board nears, decides, and grants specific variances from airport
zoning regulations in cases of practical difficulty or unnecessary hard-
ship after public notice has been given and a hearing held in con-
nection therewith (Code 1957, 1964 Repl. Vol., 1968 Supp., Art. 62C,
sec. 21j).
