ated it until the State assumed control by Chapter 296, Acts of 1951.
The school became a separate institution in 1909 and received its
present name in honor of Fannie Jackson Coppin, a former slave who
had purchased her freedom and became the first Negro woman in the
United States to receive a college degree. The school provides a four-
year curriculum for the training of elementary school teachers and
grants the degree of Bachelor of Science. The enrollment of the school
for the 1960-1961 year was 402.

The State Teachers College at Frostburg was established by Chap-
ter 406, Acts of 1898, as a normal school to prepare elementary
teachers for Western Maryland schools; it became a full four-year
college in 1934. The College offers both a two-year junior college
course and standard four-year programs in Kindergarten-Primary
Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education and Arts and
Sciences leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of
Science. In addition, the College offers, in cooperation with Memorial
Hospital in Cumberland, a program in nurses' training. The College
was authorized by the Board of Trustees of the State Teachers Col-
leges on February 26, 1958, to offer graduate work leading to the
degree of Master of Education. Students enrolling in the teacher edu-
cation program pay no tuition, but pledge to teach two years in the
public schools of Maryland following their graduation. The approxi-
mate enrollment for 1960-61 was 1066.

The State Teachers College at Salisbury was established by Chapter
280, Acts of 1924 as a normal school offering a two-year preparation
for elementary school teachers. Today, the College offers the degrees
of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts and prepares teachers not
only for the elementary schools, but also the high schools of the
State. The non-teaching degree is offered to a limited number of
students in selected major fields. Maryland students who are admitted
