themselves to teach in the public schools of Maryland for two years
following graduation. The College is fully accredited by the National
Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, and the Maryland
State Department of Education. The College enrollment for 1960-61
was as follows: full-time, 409; part-time, 36; total, 445.

The State Teachers College at Towson, oldest and largest teacher-
education institution in the State, was established as the first State
normal school by Chapter 160, Acts of 1865. The school was originally
located in Baltimore and moved to its present suburban location at
Towson in 1915 where it occupies a campus of 100 acres. In 1936 it
became a four-year teachers college with a program leading to the
degree of Bachelor of Science.

The college currently offers programs both in teacher education
and in the arts and sciences. Graduates in teacher education may be
prepared for teaching in the kindergarten, elementary, junior high or
senior high schools. Students enrolled in the program of arts and
sciences may qualify in any one of several major fields for a
Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. The college also
offers a program of graduate studies for teachers in the elementary
school leading to the degree of Master of Education.

Students enrolling in the four-year curriculum for prospective
teachers pay no tuition if they are residents of Maryland and promise
to teach in the public schools of the State following their graduation.
The total number of students enrolled in the college for the academic
year 1960-61 was 1640.
