The Eastern Shore State Hospital was established by the General
Assembly of 1912, and the first patients admitted in 1915. This hos-
pital provides for the care of mentally ill white persons who are resi-
dents of the Eastern Shore. There are approximately 525 patients.

SPRINGFIELD STATE HOSPITAL

The Springfield State Hospital was established by the General As-
sembly of 1894 and opened for patients in 1896. The hospital pro-
vides for the care of mentally ill patients from Western Maryland,
although patients from other areas may be admitted as necessary.
There are about 3042 patients hospitalized at Springfield.

Spring Grove State Hospital was established in 1797. It provides
for the hospitalization of mentally ill white persons from Southern
Maryland, although others are also admitted. The number of pa-
tients nresentiv receiving hospitalization is 2316.
