ROSEWOOD STATE TRAINING SCHOOL

Rosewood State Training School was established by the General
Assembly of 1888, and the first children were admitted in 1889. The
school provides for the care and training of mentally defective white
children. Approximately 1250 children are in custody at Rosewood.

In December 1940 the natural resources of Maryland were ad-
ministered by nine separate conservation agencies. The General As-
sembly which met in January 1941 consolidated these nine agencies
into five equal Departments (Code 1947 Supp., Art. 19A, sees. 5-12G),
namely, Department of Tidewater Fisheries, Department of Game
and Inland Fish, Department of State Forests and Parks, Depart-
ment of Geology, Mines and Water Resources, Department of Re-
search and Education. The Bureau of Mines, formerly attached to
the Department of Labor and Industry, was placed under the De-
partment of Geology, Mines and Water Resources.

The same act which established these five Departments also created
the Board of Natural Resources to coordinate and integrate the ac-
tivities of these Departments (Code 1947 Supp., Art. 19A, sees. 1-4).
The Board is composed of five ex-officio and eight appointive mem-
bers. The ex-officio members are the Chairman of the Commission
